Bagel Rising

Bagel Rising is an exemplary business in many aspects. First off, it's really really good. The bagels are great, the sandwiches are delicious (personal favorites are avocado dream on honey grain and tuna melt) and the drinks (organic coffee, homemade lemonade, espresso beverages, and a variety of bottled juices) are tasty. The staff is friendly, there's free wi-fi, and even a selection of vegan baked goods to appeal to everyone. Also, a frequent buyers card where every 11th sandwich and drink are free.

Dos Amigos is great- really really good burritos. Not too expensive, plus a frequent buyer card where the 10th one is free. The atmosphere in the restaurant is really good. All young, trendy people working there, local artwork on the walls, and local newspapers all around to look at events. The citrus chicken burrito is really good, along with the vegan chili (a cup along with chips is less than $3). Local business with local products in their food, this business sets the bar for small New England businesses.

TRADER JOES

Trader Joes is more healthy, more green, and much less expensive than most supermarkets in the Boston area. They are committed to reusable bags which greatly reduces their impact when compared to Shaws. Trader Joes also sells tons of organic products which are healthier and better for the environment (and also taste better!).

This location is on the C-line, I usually walk from my apartment, but many others access by public transportation - no need for a car!

Trident Bookseller & Cafe

I really like the idea of a bookstore/restaurant, as books and food are two of my favorite pasttimes. I think Trident does a good job of combining the two, while still managing to keep the two areas separate. It creates a setting of two separate stores, yet the ability to browse through the books while enjoying a really really good meal makes one big happy package.

In terms of food, I believe Crispy Crepes is one of the absolute best crepes place in the city. Much better than the crepes place in Coolidge Corner, the Crepes at this place have some girth. All the crepes I've gotten (to be honest, I haven't gotten any of the paninis because I can't get over the crepes, I almost don't want to try anything else) have been delicious and filled with fresh ingredients. It's almost like they cut everything up right then to put in your crepes. Personal favorites include strawberries and nutella and the california. The breakfast sandwiches are also good.

Newbury comics is any music snob or comic-geek-boys dreamworld. Belonging slightly to both of these descriptions, I love it. With an amazing selection of music, whatever you're looking for you can probably find there. Most things are being sold at a comparable rate to big businesses as well, so it's not like you're losing money buying local. The CD selection is Huge, both new and used. The DVD selection is also really great, every movie I've ever really wanted they've had, at a decent price. Newbury also has gizmos and gadgets up the wahzoo.

Warrens is straight up good seafood. Located right over the NH border, Warrens is situated on the Piscataqua River which provides for great views. They have awesome Maine lobster, and all the great seafood you would expect when dining in a Maine costal town. They also have a massive salad bar that comes with your meal which is fresh and compliments their delicious seafood! Warrens has been around since 1940 and is an institution in Kittery for it's amazing food and great service. Check it out.

They don't use straws and don't use paper napkins, at least they aren't overly wasteful, right?

TASTE IN NEWTONVILLE

Taste is a great small cafe in Newtonville. They could use a bit more space, but it's size brings with it a nice, cozy coffee house atmosphere. Taste has a very varied menu - their coffee is great, as are their crepes (soo good). Their sandwiches taste great, but they are way too small for the price. The staff is very friendly and they have many regular customers. They recycle, but beyond that don't seem to have many green practices - hopefully as Taste continues to grow their green practices will expand!

Starbucks starbucks starbucks. I actually really like starbucks. I worked for them for awhile and they treated me well. This particular location (which I didn't work at) is good and bad. The staff is friendly, so that's a good thing. The drinks usually come out right, so that's a usually good thing. It's not all that speedy, so that's a not so good thing. And you have to deal w/ thousands of tourists, many of whom are small children wanting frappucinos (as a former starbucks employee, i can attest to the fact that making frappucinos is not a fun time).

Sabatinos is right below my apartment, so naturally I indulge in their pizza often. It's a great place to grab a quick bite. They have great tasting pizza, subs, salads, pasta - everything you'd expect from an Italian kitchen. It is more of a to-go place than somewhere you'd want to sit down for a meal.
