TOWN DINER

The Deluxe Town Diner has everything good and green going for it! Where else can you find an authentic vintage diner serving up traditional diner food that also has a tea list and serves chocolate soy milk? It rules! There really is something for everyone here.

My favorite morning dish is the Ployes. These hot pancakes are vegan and can be served with a side of veggie sausage. For lunch, the falafel sandwich is crispy and satisfying.

This family owned and operated diner is in tune with the green movement. They use their waste vegetable oil to heat the diner.

Harvest Coop Markets

The Harvest Coop is a true example of how a grocery store should be. Everything about this place is A+. First, the groceries. They sell organic and conventional produce, also highlighting what comes from local farms. They have a huge selection of bulk items, you can even bring in your own containers to refill. Some examples of bulk items: tofu, soy sauce, honey, grains, spices etc. Harvest's frozen/cold areas have great variety for being a smaller than the average big box grocery store. Lots of veggie /vegan choices and local companies.

Bagel Rising

Bagel Rising is the only thing worth getting out of bed for on the weekend, and I don't even live in Allston. Their jalapeno bagels actually taste like jalapeno. They have 5 variates of tofu spread and baked tofu for sandwiches. Even though it is always packed, the line moves quickly and everyone in there gets a sense of their environmental impact reducing business ethic.

You can also get their bagels at Esprsso Royale on Comm Ave and Newbury St. Its cool to see a local bakery distributing to other businesses in their own city.

Miracle Of Science Bar & Grill

The Miracle of Science is a small bar near Central Sq in Cambridge. It is a great place to meet friends for a drink or grab a meal. They serve the kind of food you crave all day and plenty of beer to go with it!

Miracle is famous for burgers, but they also offer a variety of vegetarian and vegan selections. The veggie burger is so good it has converted meat eaters.

The service is casual and no nonsense- Just look at the "periodic element" chalkboard menu- this is green as it cuts down on paper used for menus!

Dalias Bistro and Wine Bar is a cozy romantic gem hidden in Brookline on Beacon St. The wine list is broken down into categories for the novice and expert wine enjoyer alike. The menu is seasonal and is inspired by the weekly Brookline Farmers Market. Some of these daily specials include heirloom tomato salad and strawberry salsa. The food is always delicious and the atmosphere is relaxing and comfortable.

BUDDHAS DELIGHT TOO VEGETARIAN RESTAURANT

This is actually called "My Thai Cafe Vegetarian & Bubble Tea Bistro". It used to be called Buddah's too and it related to the Buddah's restaurant in Chinatown. My Thai is unique in the asian vegetarian food realm. Usually these restaurants serve a lof of deep fried tofu and mock meats. My Thai has a really fresh approach. You can taste the lime and basil infused sauces. Crispy nuts add depth of flavor to some of their mock chicken meals. You can even order vegan "seafood" at My Thai. I recommend the curries, the platters, and the basil "chicken".

SALVATION ARMY

The Salvation Army Thrift Store in Central Sq Cambridge is one of the "good ones". It is not as picked over as some of the thrift shops in other sections of the city. This store in particular has an impressive collection of books- old, new, kids books, cook books, you name it. Sally's (as I call the place) has all the usual thrift store finds, such as furniture, clothing, shoes, and kitchen stuff. I got a sweet set of dishes here, service for 6, for a mere $19 bucks. A set like that would cost 3x as much even at a cheaper store like Ikea.

DEEP ELLUM BAR

Deep Ellum Bar is a great addition to Allston Village. The vibe of the place is totally casual but it has this really classic dark wood/tiled floor atmosphere that makes it a classy joint. Good place to go on a date or drink martinis with your friends. The stars of this bar are the craft beers. I don't know all that much about craft beers but the servers and bar tenders are very friendly and knowledgeable.

Grasshopper Vegetarian Restaurant

Grasshopper has been serving the Allston community delicious vegan food for many years. The offer an extensive menu including tofu dishes, mock meats, tofu cheesecakes, noodles etc. I highly recommend the "No Name". It is a special dish of crispy fried seitan in a sweet sauce. If you can't decide what to order, visit the all you can eat buffet. The service is accurate and timely. This is also a great place to get takeout from.
