CAFENATION

Cafenation is a local, independently-owned coffee shop in Brighton Center that serves specialty coffee drinks and a wide array of yummy sandwiches and crepes. They also serve smoothies, baked goods, and salads. All sandwiches come with a side salad that has an excellent balsamic glaze, and the portion sizes are just right. My favorite dessert crepe is a dark chocolate and strawberry concoction, and I have too many favorite panini sandwiches to choose from.

Veggie Planet Pizza

This isn't the place to take your parents when they are in town visiting, but it's a great restaurant that does a lot of things right. It's cheap, the portions are very large, it's got tons of (obviously) vegetarian, vegan, and healthy options, it's good, satisfying food, and it gets lots of green points.

B Good

This fairly new Brookline restaurant joins locations in the South End, Harvard Square, and Newbury Street. B good is Boston's answer to fast food--you can eat the "all-American meal" without feeling guilty in the morning: no trans fats, frozen patties, questionable ingredients, or trucked in foods with weird stabilizers and preservatives. Instead this local chain (with national aspirations, I would imagine) makes "real food" that tastes good and appeals to both healthy and junk food eaters alike.

FELIPES TAQUERIA

For years I was slavishly devoted to Anna's Taqueria, ignoring anyone who suggested I try a different burrito joint. Slowly, very slowly, I was won over to Felipe's in Harvard Square, and I'll tell you twhy:

1. It's cheaper
2. Whole-wheat tortillas if you want 'em
3. Salsa bar
4. It's open late-night (until 2 am on weekends)
5. Unlike at Anna's, where you have to grovel/flirt with the assembler if you want a little corn in your burrito, at Felipe's they have a little dish of it ready to go. Believe me, corn makes every burrito better.

BELLAGIO HAIR & SKIN INC

Bellagio is a Newbury Street-style salon tucked away in an unassuming corner of Brighton (with lower prices than you will find downtown). I got an excellent haircut here today from Christina--she found out exactly what I wanted, gave me some excellent suggestions, and even used a cutting technique that's good for curly hair. The shampoo massage was fabulous, and the vibe in the salon is very relaxing--soothing music, not a lot of chatter, and one of those little zen waterfall gizmos in the corner.

DARWINS LTD

With two locations and a couple dozen great sandwiches on the menu, Darwin's is a great place to go for lunch if you are in Cambridge. The sandwiches are huge, loaded, and yummy, with inventive combinations (like hummus, avocado, apple, carrot, & honey mustard...), good cheeses, (havarti dill, boursin, aged cheddar), great bread choices (ciabatta, pumpernickel), and interesting dressings (Jamaican relish, sundried tomato pesto, horseradish scallion mayonnaise).

BRIGHT TOWN CLEANERS

Bright Town Cleaners in Brighton Center offers drycleaning, tailoring, and laundering services at fairly reasonable prices (for Boston!) and the staff is very friendly. If you need something done more quickly than usual, they try to accommodate you. They are also an independently-owned, local business, so money spent there goes into your own community rather than to a conglomerate.

BOCA GRANDE RESTAURANT

Boca Grande locations continue to pop up around Boston, and they are a pretty good bet for decent Mexican food. (I still say it is hard to get great Mexican food anywhere in Boston, but that is the California girl in me talking.) They have lots of options to choose from, including fat burritos, quesadillas, soft tacos, rice and bean platters, tostadas, and even tamales. It's easy to get a pretty cheap and satisfying meal here.

BEACON HILL ATHLETIC CLUB

This Brighton Center location of the city-wide Beacon Hill Athletic Clubs is a fairly new club (opened 2005) that offers a nice, well-lit space to work out, with ample cardio equipment, very friendly staff, and good weekly classes like Pilates, Spinning, and Yoga.

SABATINOS ITALIAN KITCHEN

Sabatino's is my go-to for Italian takeout, and it almost always hits the spot. They have especially good mozzarella sticks, and I like to order their mushroom raviolis. The pizza is pretty good too. I have never once ventured inside (how's that for trust?) since I always get it delivered, but from what I can see from the outside, it's not the kind of place you would go to enjoy the ambiance anyway.
