TRADER JOES

Behind my building is a 24 hours Shaws. It probably takes me less than 2 minutes to get from the door of my apartment to the Entrance of Shaws. Going to Trader Joes for my weekly or Bi-weekly grocery trips is alot more of a trip, and it definitely takes more than a half hour not including the time spent waiting for the green line to come. But it's always worth it. Not only is it less expensive, but the quality and care behind their products is outstanding in comparison to Shaw's.

Every weekend, without fail, there is a line out the door at this place. They make fresh, amazing bagels everyday and their sandwich combinations are not to be missed, plus there is plenty of vegetarian options. I love Espresso Royale. Not only do they make the meanest bagels around, have a comfortable atmosphere AND killer espresso, but they are also certainly green certified. Brookline Booksmith

Boston has a lot of bookstores, granted, but this is by far one of the very best around. It's been awarded best bookstore for new & used books and best place to see a reading for years, and it's well deserved. I could spend hours in this place, plus they always have what you're looking for & the help is top-notch and friendly. The basement also has a VideoSmith, for the few of us left who don't have Netflix, and their Criterion collection is not to be missed.

This place is a recycling mecca! This thrift store in Allston is huge, and it's hard to leave empty handed. The prices are low, really low, and though a visit here requires some digging and sifting, there is something here for everyone. They have discounts for seniors, and all the goods in the store are second-hand. Urban Renewals sells everything- furniture, home goods, clothes for the entire family, toys, fabrics, accessories, electronics, and basically anything else you can think of. It's an experience.

I highly recommend this agency! I have some real unfortunate horror stories about Real Estate Agents prior to using At Home, but that's definitely over because I'm sticking with these guys. As soon as I met my agent Kate, I knew I didn't have to feel like I was talking to a con-artist car salesman anymore. I know they advocate for walking as opposed to driving to appointments/visits weather &location permitting, and they do recycle paper.

This place is a hidden jem that thrives on recycling. This thrift store in Allston is a great place to find vintage furniture, all located on the basement level in two big rooms, and there is optional same-day delivery service. A visit here requires some digging and sifting, and occasionally items are slightly overpriced, but if you check back often items are eventually discounted. They offer a little bit of everything: books, movies, records, house wares, furniture, clothing, bags, toys, accessories, electronics, home goods, and all sorts of eccentric gifts.

I'm currently a customer of the Downtown Crossing Bruegger's pretty much 5 days a week. They're breads/bagels & baked goods are top-notch, especially for a franchise. This place is really well run, there's hardly ever a wait, the staff is super & efficient. I highly recommend the Wild Mountain Blue Berry coffee. All the coffee (which is surprisingly VERY good) is Fair Trade Certified, and they do recycle, they have a special discount if you bring your own mug, and they don't have plastic bags.

I found some clear and practical tips for the traditional office setting that are simple and easy to do. Little steps can change a lot in the way of bad everyday habits. The tips were on ink.com: 1. Stop throwing away money- Go through your trash. You'll get a new sense of how much it costs to buy, store, and dispose of stuff. Eliminate unnecessary photocopying and reuse packaging for shipping. 2. Get an energy audit -Most local utilities offer businesses free on-site consultations on how they can reduce usage and save money. Among the frequent suggestions: Improve insulation, and install timers to turn lights off automatically. 3. Go paperless- Encourage e-mailing. When paper is necessary, photocopy on both sides and use old letterhead for scratch. 4. Consider the commute- Provide preferred parking for carpoolers. Offer transit passes to employees who take the bus or subway and bike racks for cyclists. Let workers telecommute. 5. Curb business travel- Teleconference instead of traveling. For must-go trips, keep track of the miles driven and flown and buy "carbon offsets" from a nonprofit like Carbonfund.org to make up for the greenhouse gas emissions. 6. Buy green- Tell suppliers that you're interested in sustainable products and set specific goals for buying recycled, refurbished, or used. Make the environment, and not just price, a factor when purchasing. 7. Detox -Many offices have toxic substances, such as used batteries and copier toner, on hand. Talk to suppliers about alternatives to toxics, and make sure you properly dispose of the ones you can't avoid using. 8. Rethink transportation- Consider the petroleum it takes to ship and receive products. Evaluate the impact of products you buy or sell, and find ways to mitigate those impacts. 9. Get the employees involved- Create a team to lead the company's eco-efforts and determine where you can have the biggest impact for the least amount of money. 10. Communicate- Inform suppliers and customers about your efforts. And get in touch with local regulatory agencies, many of which offer financial incentives to businesses that clean up their acts. --**In addition I'd like to advocate for Bike Messengers! Why choose a big FedEx truck if the delivery is within your own city? Plus, I think there's a lot of novelty in getting a package delivered via the power of superior leg muscles and hard work.
