It may not be "customs" per se, but don't you have to fill out a form declaring any produce and living (or formerly living) items you have when you are traveling to or from Hawaii? He speaks about what we can gain from looking at the world from a plant's perspective, rather than a plant-eater's perspective. He writes about these ideas in his book, The Botany of Desire, which was published before his (I think it's now safe to say) watershed books The Omnivore's Dilemma and In Defense of Food.Bald heads, glasses, hand gestures...
