Ula Cafe

I stopped by Ula Cafe yesterday for the first time, and I had a very pleasant experience. The initial impression of the spot is very cool. Outdoor patio (non-smoking, good news for all you healthnuts and former-smokers, myself being the latter), young and friendly staff, chalk signs and tidbits of info scattered about, art exhibits, etc. Computer geeks and inked bodies abound, though mommies and knitters would feel neither unwelcome nor out-of-place.

Veggie Planet Pizza

Veggie Planet is such a mixed bag. For years, I only ate here because I was seeing a show at Club Passim. However, befriending a born-and-raised vegetarian has changed my world, as well as my dining options. I went to Veggie Planent recently just to eat, and it wasn't half bad.

Trident Bookseller & Cafe

Trident is a little oasis from the Newbury Street nonsense. It is always a relief to pop in here. I have spent many afternoons prowling through their book selection. Though it is small, they cram a lot in. You might not be able to find exactly what you're looking for, but you're sure to find something interesting. For a small bookstore, they have quite a sizable adult section, but it's the Mass. Ave end of Newbury, so it's all par for the course. They also carry every magazine under the sun, almost.

ANNAS TAQUERIA

Let's be real here. Anna's is bomb. Any Bostonian will tell you that (my California man may disagree, but he doesn't count). I spent many afternoons blowing off class in favor of a quesadilla at Anna's, and it was always worth it. If you're looking cheap eats in Boston (there are a few locations, so you're never far), Anna's is the spot. The quesadillas are my personal fave, though the burritos come highly recommended, as well.

BARTLEYS BURGER COTTAGE

Mr. Bartley's serves the best burger in town. The place has been there for decades, for good reason. It continuously gets awards from local papers for it's bomb grub. The burgers are thick and juicy, and they are all cooked to order. I'm big on simplicity and stick with the burger supreme (cheeseburger and fries, hold the rest), but this is the kind of place where anything you could think of could be on your burger. The menu is witty (all the burgers have names) and incredibly extensive. If you're not up for a burger, there are plenty of dinner specials to choose from.
