Companies to Watch: Rinen Tackles Carbon Tracing

Last week at the TechCrunch50 Conference, a pair of Japanese entrepreneurs presented their business plan and early-stage application for tracking the carbon footprint of ‘anything’.

The start-up, called Rinen, is currently putting the finishing touches on the beta launch of OpenTrace.org, and is far enough along to have demonstrated how the application will work in the real world.

Videoconferencing - business is booming! Gas prices or environmental concern?

What do Robert Downey Junior and videoconferencing have in common? Give up? Both were born in 1965 and are having their renaissance in 2008, a mere 43ish years after introduction to this world. Each has shown flashes of brilliance in years past, but 2008 is finally their year. Sure, Tropic Thunder and Ironman are no Batman, and videoconferencing isn’t Beijing, but believe after those two behomoths of the summer, RD Jr and videoconferencing are top notch right now.

Come on Baby, Light My Tires!

The cement industry creates 5-7% of the worlds CO2 emissions. In order to reduce this impact on global warming, Canadian cement company Lafarge North America is developing alternative fuels to fire their kilns. They plan to use good ol' switchgrass, woody plants, industrial hemp, plastics, and tires....huh? Tires?! Yep, tires!

Waste to energy entering the mainstream?

Here's a timely follow-up to Max's "word of the day", biogas. There was an article today in the New York Times about the many types of waste to energy (biogas is just one) that are finally becoming economically viable because of the high cost of gasoline.
