Boston, Newton, Cambridge: Massachusetts's Homes of the Hybrids
The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles has recently released a list of hybrid cars and SUVs that have been registered in each individual town during 2008. The list provides a report on the number of hybrid vehicles (excluding trucks) registered in each town, the total number of cars registered, and the percentage of which are hybrids.
According to the list, Boston takes first place with 1,615 registered hybrids, Cambridge second with 705, and Newton in third with 813.
However, the provided percentages reveal that the greatest comparable interest in registered hybrid vehicles occurred in Carlisle (2.9%), Lincoln (2.8%), and Concord (2.6%).
This list may reveal any of the following: communities with the greatest sense of an environmental consciousness, the communities with members financially capable of reducing the cost of their daily commute, or the communities with the greatest initiative and motivation to sign up for those dreary wait lists. And that ambition deserves some applause--especially since the wait list for Chevrolet's all-electric Volt (set to be released in 2010) has already accumulated over 33,000 "handraisers".
