Zebra Chips: Now with Bits of Real Zebra!

So you know they're good!

Way back in 1994 potato chip companies started seeing a rather strange pattern in many of their chips from potato farms in Mexico. When cooked, some chips developed nasty brown striations. The striping syndrome was quickly deemed “Zebra Chip” disease, and has since spread to Texas, parts of California and Arizona, and even as far as Guatemala and New Zealand. Feeling the striped horse was unfairly blamed for the disease, Zebra advocacy groups considered defamation complaints, but figured any buzz is good buzz so they backed off.

Chipotle's sustainable image slips on a tomato

Ever since divesting from McDonald's, Chipotle has managed to cultivate a unique reputation as a fast food company committed to sustainability. Their website has a page describing their commitment to "Food With Integrity," which includes humanely and naturally raised livestock and recycling. The page even exhorts viewers to read books such as Eric Schlosser's Fast Food Nation and Michael Pollan's The Omnivore's Dilemma.

Corn-free, Day 14

3:37 A.M. - IzzitGreen Office

At last, its here: my final day on the corn-free diet. Bittersweet, it is. Well...sort of. Much to my surprise, I will not be having corn with dinner tonight. As difficult as it was for me to eliminate corn completely from my diet, there is no doubt that I have accomplished and learned quite a bit during this 2-week ordeal.

Farm Livin’ is the Life For Me (or at least my son...)

My son attends a progressive elementary/middle school. In addition to reading, writing and math facts, he is learning about biomes, world cultures, technology, milking cows…

Milking cows? Yes, and slopping pigs, brushing horses, composting, gathering eggs, shoveling manure. As it happens, his school sponsors an annual trip to The Farm School, a working organic farm in northern Massachusetts that provides organic farming education and camps to children, adults and school groups.

Falling Off the Raw Food Wagon

Here at IzzitGreen we've been doing our best to try new things, test out green theories and ideas, and generally keep ourselves entertained with good, green fun.  For a week now I've been on a raw food diet, or at least moving towards one.  After my third day I was on a roll, with days four and five consisting of about 90% raw foods.  I was eating smoothies and fruit for breakfast, raw almonds as a daytime snack, salads and freshly squeezed juices for lunch and sprouted veggie wraps for dinner.  I felt...good.  Hungry, and a bit lightheaded at times, but good.
