With two locations and a couple dozen great sandwiches on the menu, Darwin's is a great place to go for lunch if you are in Cambridge. The sandwiches are huge, loaded, and yummy, with inventive combinations (like hummus, avocado, apple, carrot, & honey mustard...), good cheeses, (havarti dill, boursin, aged cheddar), great bread choices (ciabatta, pumpernickel), and interesting dressings (Jamaican relish, sundried tomato pesto, horseradish scallion mayonnaise).
They also have three daily "specials" to mix up the sandwich choices, one of which is always vegetarian, and all of which are given cute names. Sometimes you can buy these by the pound, depending on how big you want your lunch to be. They also have a breakfast menu that looks equally inviting, although I've never tried it.
You can pick up fancy chips, little dark chocolate bars, and an array of deli salads and sides if your sandwich isn't enough. Everything I've tried has been quite good, even though I never seem to get out of there without paying over $10. (Prices are not cheap, but the quality is high.)
The food at Darwin's is made on-site with fresh ingredients, and it's a local business with only two locations--two good reasons to spend your money there instead of at the national lunch chains that are starting to populate Harvard Square. The locations are very public-transportation friendly and the menu has ample vegetarian options.
