Green dog grooming? who would have thought, but this place has really made a positive effort to be environmentally conscious. Using recycled toys, organic beds, and renewable cat litter are just some of the great ideas that make Brookline dog grooming stand out from the rest of the pack. They offer a variety of services beyond grooming for your pet like daycare, training, and pet supplies. In business for over 30 years, the staff really cares about your pet and it shows in the service. I wouldn't take my dog anywhere else
Like Jordan, I was also a new pet owner when I came to Brookline
Grooming and Pet Supplies. We spent money like new parents, trying to
make sure we had all the right toys and all the right foods and treats
for our little bundle of joy, Eko, a chocolate lab rescue. (I highly
recommend adopting rescued dogs instead of buying from breeders,
btw. Very environmentally friendly.)
Brookline Grooming has it all. They specifically state on their Web
site that their focus is on natural foods, which, if you read about
what goes into non-natural, traditional dogfoods, is so important to
your dog's longterm health, as well as just a sane decision. (Think hot
dogs and Twinkies are scary? Try reading up on the ingredients in IAMS or Purina.)
They also, as Jordan mentioned, just went "green". Specifically, they
say that they now have "recycled toys, renewable cat litter, beds
stuffed with soda bottles. We also offer chemical free pest control
and cleaning products." Also, "when you bring in your own recyclable
bag receive a $ .10 discount!"
So, say what you will about how yuppie it is to have doggy specialty
stores in your neighborhood -- we've had a great experience so far.
Our dog was underweight when we first brought him home, but after a
steady diet of Evo, an all-natural, high-protein specialty brand
that's unavailable in grocery stores, he's plumped out nicely, and his
once-dull coat has a gorgeous sheen. They also carry several brands
of all-natural treats -- helpful when you're teaching your new dog how
to walk on a leash and sit etc, as they smell stronger and taste
better, so he/she learns a lot faster. They have a freezer full of
raw foods for those dog owners who want to go the extra mile. And even
though I'm veg and therefore shudder at the array of meats and bones
that are my dog's natural quarry, their gourmet beef knuckles make my
dog more deliriously happy than anything else (except for my love,
hopefully).
My one beef with this spot is that it closes at 8pm on weekdays and
6pm on weekends. My boyfriend and I both work late and we work odd
hours, which means that if we run out of Evo kibble and can't make it
to the store before it closes, our pups has to make to with human food
(of course he doesn't mind, but a dog cannot live on canned salmon
alone).
The first time I went to Brookline Grooming was in January. I was a brand new pet owner, and was searching for the "healthy" cat food that the shelter I had adopted from recommended. Brookline Grooming had window painting that said "We're going green in 2008!", so I knew my chances were good.
Brookline Grooming doesn't just carry one brand of organic, all natural (for real, just just "all natural"), grain free cat food...they carry about 10 including Innova and Wellness. I don't know anything about dog food, but I'm sure they carry the healthiest options for that, too.
They also have non-clay cat litter (I use Fresh Step, which is pine shavings), and they sell a lot of items that don't have excess packaging. They also sell reusable shopping bags made from recycled materials, something you see often at grocery stores but not at other retailers. And I don't get an eyebrow raise when I put things in my backpack instead of taking a shopping bag.
In addition to selling pet supplies, they also, obviously, have a grooming service. I've never taken my cat there to be groomed, but all of the dogs in the back (visible behind the counter) look psyched, like they are at Disneyland, not a dog groomer. Something to ask in the future could be what types of chemicals they use in the grooming process. I have a feeling they use products that are both pet- and environment-safe.
