My office is right off of the Blue Hills reservation and although I have yet t climb to its peak, this place offers a variety of activities for the green and recreational you that sometimes hides behind the hustle and bustle of city life. Not only does it offer the amazing yet manageable hill for hiking, skiing and mountain biking which you can see driving on 93 but also a little place I like to go at the very bottom, Hougton's Pond. This big pond provides a beach-like atmosphere for relaxing, soaking up the sun, or even riding your bike or walking after a meal. Picnic anyone? There is also a recreational area equipped with tennis courts and ball fields among other goodies. What's best, it's only a 30 minute drive from Boston (no traffic that is). Get out there, the Blue Hill Reservation is a hidden gem!
Google "Hiking around Boston" and this awesome little website comes up:
http://www.geocities.com/Yosemite/Trails/1171/#BHi
It lists all the places you can escape from the urban grind within the greater Boston area, including places accessible by T.
My fiance and I took our tree huggin friend's advice and went to the Blue Hills Reservation this past weekend. It is 7000 acres of protected land. When I checked it out online, the satellite view was kinda funny. Its densely populated around the exterior of this sanctuary, but as we hiked up the final stretch to the "summit"- it really felt like we were worlds away. There were butterflies dancing across the sky and landing on wildflowers I had never seen before. We foraged for some fiddleheads along the trail, and were amazed by how cool it was under the forest canopy compared to the heat of the highway.
Obviously, it was a good time. Why is it green? I feel much more motivated to try 10x harder to be green after spending a little time in the woods. Living in the city, where everything is paved over, sometimes we can forget why we need to be green.
